Brock Badgers Win CIS Championship

Ottawa, ON (CIS) - The Brock University Badgers (OUA bronze medallists) defeated the Carleton University Ravens (OUA silver medallists) 1-0 in Overtime to win the 2002 Canadian Interuniversity Men's Soccer Championship at Carleton's Keith Harris Stadium in Ottawa.

The Badgers finished the OUA regular season third in the OUA South/East Division, then in the playoffs went on to defeat Ryerson, 5-0, Queen's, 1-0, and after losing to the Toronto Varsity Blues, 2-1 in penalty kicks, defeated the York Yeomen, 2-0, to earn a berth in the National Championship as the third Ontario School. In the CIS Championship, the Badgers were the only team to go undefeated as they tied Victoria, 2-2 and defeated Toronto, 2-0 to win Pool "B" and advance to the National Championship match.

The Badgers weathered Carleton's early attacks keeping the high-scoring Ravens off the scoresheet during periods in the first half where the ball never left their side of the field. In the second half Brock came alive and pushed Carleton to overtime. Ravens keeper Bryan Jones made several saves to keep Brock off the board.

In the overtime, the Badgers came out looking to score and the momentum and play shifted to Brock's side. The Badgers led by their captain, Mike Hadden (Whitby, ON) and rookie forward Joseph Del Priore (St. Catharines, ON) pushed the ball forward until rookie forward Andrew Norton (Belleville, ON) had a clear shot from twenty yards out and scored the match winner at the 104th minute.

It was Brock's First National Soccer Championship and head coach Bill Millar's second CIS National medal, after the Badgers won Bronze in 1995. Millar's lifetime National Soccer Tournament record is 3-0-3.

The Carleton Ravens stood in the rain proudly accepting the CIS silver medals. The team accomplished all but one "goal" during the 2002 CIS season. They won the 2002 OUA East/South regular season title, earned a berth in the CIS Championship by virtue of their 2-1 overtime victory over the York Yeomen in the playoffs, advanced to the CIS Championship Final, at home, but fell that "one goal" short of finishing their dream season. Carleton is very proud of head coach Sandy Mackie, captain and First Team All-Canadian Kwesi Loney (Toronto, ON) and the rest of the 2002 Carleton Team's accomplishments during "the run to Nationals".

Player of the Match: 1st year forward Andrew Norton, BROCK

McGill Redmen Claim Bronze

OTTAWA - Earlier on Sunday morning, the McGill University Redmen (QSSF champions) defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (OUA champions), 3-0, to win the CIS Championship bronze medal. The Redmen came out strong testing All-Canadian goalkeeper Yuri Elkaim (Toronto, ON) throughout the first half.

Both teams were scoreless at the half, but the Redmen came out on fire in the second frame and rookie striker Fernando Daluiso (Montreal, QC) opened the scoring at the 51st minute and McGill was off and running. 5th year midfielder Philippe Lazure (Kirkland, QC) all but sealed the victory with the insurance goal at the 83rd minute, and Toronto put the ball into its own net at the 90th minute to give the Quebec Champions their bronze medal. 3rd year keeper Dustin Diedricksen (Madison, CT) earned his second shutout of the tournament.

Player of the Match: 4th year striker Mathieu Harding, McGILL (St-Lambert,
