UBC Thunderbirds Soar for Gold
CIS Women's Soccer Championship Gold Medal Game Report

Ottawa, ON (CIS) - The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds earned the gold medal at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Women's Soccer Championship with a 2-1 extra-time victory over the host Alberta Pandas Sunday afternoon at Foote Field in Edmonton.

The gold medal is the T-Birds' third women's soccer title, following previous victories in 1993 and 1987. The Thunderbirds made their way to the national championship tournament after a 12-1-1 regular-season record and winning the Canada West conference. UBC went undefeated in three games at the championship.

Alberta, which won the CIS crown last season in Ottawa, finished the regular season with a 6-5-3 record and qualified for the tournament as host school. The Pandas finished the event with a 2-1 record.

In the 93rd minute, senior forward Rosalyn Hicks (North Vancouver, B.C.) was able to poke a loose ball into the Alberta net for the "golden goal". The winning tally came just after a corner kick that left the Pandas defence scrambling and a swarm of T-Birds fighting for a shot. Hicks was able to get free and got just enough on the ball to beat Pandas rookie goalkeeper Laurie Reid (Edmonton, Alta.).

The T-Birds opened the scoring in the 24th minute as the Alberta defence failed to clear the ball out of harm's way inside its own penalty area, allowing 5th year veteran midfielder Lianne McHardy (Vancouver, B.C.) to hammer a shot inside the near post past Reid.

But the Pandas didn't waste any time getting even as Second Team All-Canadian Aisha Alfa (Winnipeg, Man.) was left all alone in the box to head a rebound off the crossbar behind UBC rookie keeper and First Team All-Canadian Hannah Shoichet (Victoria, B.C.) in the 28th minute. The goal was Alfa's fourth of the Championship, tying her atop the tournament scoring list with UBC's All-Canadian midfielder Kristine Jack (New Westminster, B.C.). Complete Story & Game Summary

Laval Earns Bronze on "Golden Goal"

Edmonton, Alb (CIS) - The Laval Rouge et Or earned the bronze medal at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Women's Soccer Championship after a 1-0 extra-time victory over the Western Ontario Mustangs at Foote Field in Edmonton Sunday afternoon.

4th year forward Julie Lapointe (Beauport, Que.) notched the "golden goal" in the 92nd minute after a furious scramble inside the Western penalty area. The Mustangs defence failed to clear the ball and with three Laval attackers creating havoc, Lapointe calmly tucked a high shot over Western 4th year goalkeeper Noelle Carbone (Windsor, Ont.).

Laval, which captured the Quebec conference title after a 13-0-1 regular-season record, finished the CIS championship tournament with a 2-1 mark. The Rouge et Or's only loss of the season came against the host Alberta Pandas, who play UBC for the gold later today. Western, which went 9-0-1 during the regular season and was runner-up in the OUA playoffs, ended Nationals with a 1-2 record.

SPALDING PLAYER OF THE GAME for Laval: Melissa Lafond, 3rd year sweeper (Laval, Qué.)
MOLSON PLAYER OF THE GAME for Western Ontario: Sarah Luscombe, 1st year midfielder (London, Ont.)
