Lancers repeat as OUA Champions
Head Coach Dennis Fairall and the Windsor Lancers Track and Field team proved again this weekend why they are the most dominant Track and Field Team in the country. Coming into the weekend with the #1 ranking on both the Men's and Women's side, the Lancers didn't disappoint, capturing both the Men's and Women's 2006 OUA Track and Field Championships. The Lancer Men captured their 15th OUA Team title in the last 16 years while the Lancer Women won their 12th in the last 16 years. In the first event of the day on Saturday, the Lancer Women picked up 13 points with impressive finishes from Sara Jibb and Kari Hedges in the Women's Weight Throw. Hedges finished 4th overall with a throw of 13.36, while JIbb took home the silver medal with a toss of 14.18. Following the Women in the Men's Weight Throw, the Lancer's Ian Glassford placed 3rd with a throw of 15.15, a 17cm personal best for the 5th year athlete. Mike Miller was right behind Glassford finishing 4th with a throw of 15.12. The Lancers continued to shine throughout the afternoon, with strong performances in every event. For the second time in two days, Jackie Malette broke a Lancer record. Today, in a borrowed pair of shoes, Malette broke the Women's 1000m record with a time of 2:48.32 and won the gold in the event. Teammate Amina Oumesrour finished in third place at 2:52.59, and qualified for the Canadian Championships by 5/100 of a second. Kelley Park captured two gold's for the Lancer Women today, at almost exactly the same time. While competing in the Triple Jump, Park jumped the eventual winning distance of 12.11, left the event to run the 60mH where she won the gold in a time of 8.60. She then returned to the pits to finish out the event and take home the gold. Madeleine Woods won the gold medal in the Women's 600m with a time of 1:32.22. The time now ranks her #1 in Canada heading into the Championships. On the Men's side, Trevor Pye finished 2nd overall in the Men's 600m. He finished behind Toronto's Jose Carvalho with a time of 1:21.25. Andrew Coates brought home his second gold medal of the Championships in the Men's 1000m. He finished the race at 2:28.80. In the Men's 3000m, Cristiano Mauricio ran a strong race and lapped a portion of the field to take home the gold medal with a time of 8:15.21. It was a tight finish in the Men's 300m, but Jamie Adjetey-Nelson pulled through for the Lancers and finished first overall at 34.86. Adjetey-Nelson also placed 4th in the 60m with a time of 7:03. The final events of the day were the Men's and Women's 4 x 400m relays. While the Windsor Lancers had the provincial titles already secured, they fought hard until the very end. The Lancer Men's Team of Mike McLaughlin, Keenan Geer, Garvin Moses and Derek Quigley won the gold medal with a time of 3:22.71, while the Lancer Women's team of Shannon Davis, Shavonne Davis, Tammy Dufresne and Amanda Mokedanz also finished strong, taking home the gold medal in the final event of the meet. With the two OUA Team titles now under their belt, the Windsor Lancers will continue preparation in the upcoming weeks as they ready to try and defend their National Championship in Saskatchewan in two weeks time. .........................................................
