Swimming: CIS MVPs Carroll, Dickens from Worlds to Universiade

OTTAWA (CIS) - Canadian Interuniversity Sport, as the Canadian representative of the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU), announced on Wednesday the athletes and staff who will represent Canada in swimming at the 2005 Summer Universiade.

The 23rd Summer Universiade, regrouping 9,000 participants from 170 countries, will be held August 11-21 in Izmir, Turkey.

Canada will send an imposing team of 33 swimmers to the six-day competition (Aug. 12-17), up from a group of only 11 athletes who competed at the 2003 University Games in South Korea. Canadians failed to medal at the pool in 2003, a first at the Summer Universiade since 1995.

The contingent will be led by six national team members who will participate at the FINA world aquatic championships in Montreal starting on July 24, including 2004-05 CIS swimmers of the year Jennifer Carroll of Montreal, and Scott Dickens of Ancaster, Ont.

Carroll, a 24-year-old administration student from the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres, claimed three gold medals and set two meet records in her first appearance at the CIS championship in February. The backstroke specialist will swim the 50 and 100-meter events in Turkey.

Dickens, a 20-year-old arts student at the University of British Columbia, put on one of the best CIS-championship performances ever in 2005 when he captured seven medals, including five gold, and also set two championship marks. Dickens will compete in the 50, 100 and 200m breaststroke in Izmir.

Other swimmers who will represent Canada at the world championships before competing at the Universiade include University of Toronto's Liz Warden of Toronto, Simon Fraser University's Kathleen Stoody of Burnaby, B.C., UBC's Matthew Huang of Vancouver, and Indiana University's Colin Russell of Barrie, Ont.

UBC, eight-time defending CIS champion in both women's and men's swimming, will be represented by 10 swimmers in Turkey.

Eight athletes return from the 2003 Canadian Universiade team, including Jennifer Porenta of Milton, Ont., and Michel Boulianne. of Montreal. Porenta, from the University of Toronto, was the top female finisher for Canada in South Korea placing sixth in the 200m freestyle while Boulianne, from the University of Montreal, was the top male finisher with a fifth position in the 200m breaststroke.

University of Michigan's Carlos Sayao of Oakville, Ont. also has Universiade experience as he participated in the 2001 University Games in China, where he claimed Canada's lone medal at the pool finishing second in the 400m individual medley.

The Canadian support staff will be comprised of team leader Andrew Cole (McMaster) of Dartmouth, N.S., team manager Josey Corbo (Swimming Canada) of Ottawa, head coach Derrick Schoof (UBC) of Vancouver, and assistant coaches Pascal Dufresne (UQTR) of Trois-Rivieres, Que., Liam Donnelly (Simon Fraser) of Port Coquitlam, B.C., and Paula Crutcher (UNB) of Fredericton.

Canada's best performance in swimming at the Summer Universiade came in 1993 in Buffalo when the team captured 15 medals, including six gold. Canada claimed 14 medals in a single Games on two occasions, in 1991 in England and 1983 in Edmonton.

Olympians Alex Baumann and Patricia Noall hold the best individual performances in history by Canadians at World University Games. Baumann won six medals, including two gold, in 1983 while Noall claimed five medals, including one gold, in 1991.
