TORINO, Italy (CIS) - Everyday as the Men's Ice Hockey team prepares to do battle at the 23rd Winter Universiade, in Torino, Italy, there are two members of Team Canada already at work, making sure the 20 student-athletes and staff are ready to take to the ice without any problems. They arrive early and are the last to leave the rink each day as Team Canada, from the Atlantic University Sport, go for Gold at the games. They are Chad Newhook, the Head Athletic Therapist at Saint Mary's University, in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Joe Glenn, the Head Athletic Therapist, at the University of New Brunswick, in Fredericton, NB. Chad is Team Canada's Head Athletic Therapist and Joe is the team's Equipment Manager. "It is great to be working with Joe," says Newhook. "If a player goes down I have medical help right on the bench with a second certified therapist."
This is both their first international games and first time working with each other. "I have known Chad for 12 years and the rivalry in the AUS is great, but coming to Torino as part of Team Canada we have the same goal," said Glenn. Newhook, is an Acadia University Graduate, from Corner Brook, Nfld. Chad has been with Saint Mary's University since 1992 and was named their Head Athletic Therapist in 1997. Glenn is a native of Pilot Mound, Manitoba and a graduate of the University of Manitoba. Joe worked for the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers before taking the Head Athletic Therapist position 17 years ago at UNB.
"They are as important a part of our team in Torino as any student-athlete," said Head Coach Trevor Stienburg, who works with Newhook at Saint Mary's University. "Their hard work is very appreciated by the team and their positive attitude rubs off on the young student-athletes."
"It is great to represent my school, the AUS and the CIS at the Winter Universiade," said Newhook. "This is a once in a life dream and with our talent we could win a Gold Medal for Canada!"
No matter what the final results of the 2007 Winter Universiade are, Team Canada's Men's Ice Hockey team are in good hands with the veteran expertise that both Newhook and Glenn bring to the team. Not to mention the best dressed team and sharpest skates in all of Torino!
