Thunderwolves Outlast V-Reds in Epic Game

It took three regulation periods, 15 periods of mini-overtime, and 12 shooters in a shootout as Jounni Kuokkanen's Shootout goal gave the No. 3 Lakehead Thunderwolves a 5-4 win over the UNB Varsity Reds before 2480 very noisy fans in the night game of Game 2 of the Bell Varsity Cup at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay. The overtime format used at the Bell Varsity Cup is 4-on-4 for 90 seconds, then 3-on-3 for 90 seconds or until the next whistle; rotating mini-OT periods until somebody scores. After 15 mini-OT periods; it was decided to go to a shootout and Kuokkanen was Lakehead's 12th shooter in the shootout. Lakehead's other goals came from Peter Cava, Chris Shaffer, Sean Stefanski, and Murray Magill. UNB's scoring came from Jean Michel Boisvert, Craig Mahon, Ryan Mockler, and Colin Sinclair. UNB outshot Lakehead 59-49 in the game.
Lakehead's Chris Shaffer opened the game on a breakaway and he deked UNB goalie Reg Bourcier but the puck slid wide of the goal. Play went down to the Lakehead end and UNB's Andrew DeSousa fired a shot from the point that hit Lakehead goalie Chris Whitley in the mask. Lakehead then sped back up the ice and Peter Cava was set up in the slot by a great pass from Murray Magill and Cava blasted it over Bourcier's shoulder at 1:31. UNB then went on the powerplay but the Wolves killed it off. Lakehead's Brad Priestlay blasted a shot that Bourcier deflected just wide at the 4:00 mark. Lakehead then went on the powerplay but UNB killed it off. Lakehead put on the pressure at the halfway mark and Bourcier made a good save off Cava. Lakehead then went on the powerplay and Chris Shaffer converted a great pass from Joel Scherban at 12:47 with the other assist going to Jeff Richards. Lakehead kept up the pressure and Bourcier made a great toe save to rob Murray Magill at 13:45. Lakehead's Sean Stefanski picked up a nice pass from Leon Cooper on the left side and fired a rocket wrist shot that beat Bourcier over the right shoulder at 14:18. UNB called a timeout at this point. UNB picked up the play and Kyle Werner was set up all alone in front of the Lakehead goal but Chris Whitley made a great sliding pad save to save the goal. UNB went on the powerplay with two minutes left, but Lakehead killed it off to end the period. UNB outshot Lakehead 11-9 in the first.

UNB got on the board quickly in the second when Craig Mahon roofed a pass from Robert Pearce over Whitley's shoulder at 1:20. Ryan Mockler put the V-Reds within one at 3:48 when he knocked in a pass from Rob Hennigar with the other assist going to Jean Michel Boisvert. UNB then went on the powerplay and Boisvert made no mistake at 6:29 when he blasted a shot from the point that beat a screened Whitley. Lakehead then put on some pressure and UNB's Andrew DeSousa was given a five minute major and ejected from the game for a nasty crosscheck on Lakehead's Chris Shaffer in front of the UNB goal. This gave the Wolves an incredible opportunity but they could not get organized and it looked like the V-Reds were on the powerplay for the first three minutes. Lakehead Captain Joel Scherban had a good opportunity when he tried a backhander that was stopped by Bourcier to end the powerplay. Lakehead then put on pressure and Bourcier came up with a great stop to rob Lakehead's Tobias Whelan at 14:50. Peter Cava launched the puck just over the UNB goal. Then UNB went back up the ice and Rob Hennigar fired a hard shot that was stopped nicely by Whitley. The V-Reds then went on the powerplay with just over two minutes left but Lakehead killed it off nicely. UNB's Colin Sinclair then had a good opportunity as he hit the side of the net with 12 seconds left. UNB outshot Lakehead 19-10 in the second.

Lakehead came out fast in the final frame and Jeff Richards flashed down the left side, passed across to Joel Scherban on the right side, and Scherban fired at what looked like an empty UNB goal but Reg Bourcier slid across the crease and flashed the glove to make the save of the game. UNB went back up the ice and Lakehead's Whitley made a great stick save to rob the V-Reds' Troy Stonier. UNB went on the powerplay but Lakehead's pk unit kept them off the board. Lakehead immediately went on a powerplay of their own and buzzed the UNB goal but couldn't get any shots. However, UNB took a second minor, putting them down two men for 17 seconds. The Wolves fired two shots at the V-Reds goal that missed the net and then UNB was down one man. Lakehead's Peter Cava made a nice pass from the right point across to Erik Lodge on the left point. Lodge shot it on goal and Murray Magill re-directed it under Bourcier at 9:20 on the powerplay. A Lakehead defensive miscue gave the V-Reds a three-on-one and Colin Sinclair tied the game at 13:15, assisted by Boisvert and William Johnston. Lakehead went on the powerplay and Jeff Richards rang the left UNB post with 4:10 left but the Wolves could not score on this man advantage. Lakehead attacked the V-Reds goal for the next two minutes but couldn't get the puck on the net and the period ended tied four apiece heading into sudden death overtime. Lakehead outshot UNB 16-9 in the third.

The first OT period saw Lakehead's Chris Shaffer stopped on a breakaway by UNB's Boucier. The second OT saw Chris Whitley make an incredible save by somehow juggling the puck with his shoulders and flinging it out. Lakehead's Murray Magill then fired the puck just over the UNB goal. The fourth OT saw nobody get a good chance. The fifth OT saw Jeff Richards blast a drive that Bourcier handled then Jesse Ferguson fall on a breakaway. The sixth saw neither side with a good shot. The seventh OT saw Lakehead's Andrew Brown miss a completely open net and then Lakehead's Whitley rob UNB's Bart Rushmer with a glove save. The eighth OT featured Whitley making two point blank saves. The ninth OT (a 4 on 4 period) saw UNB called for too many men; a one minute penalty in the OT format. The tenth OT saw Lakehead called for a minor and UNB going on the powerplay. Lakehead's Whitley made a good save off a tip by UNB's Ferguson. The 11th OT saw UNB's Troy Stonier come close from the left side and Lakehead's Steve Rawski just miss with a long shot. The 12th OT saw UNB go a man down. Lakehead's Murray Magill was robbed by Bourcier as Magill was all alone in front of the UNB goal. Lakehead's Whitley then made a nice save off UNB's Stacey Smallman. The 13th OT saw Whitley make another good save off Smallman. The 14th OT saw Lakehead Captain Scherban hauled down on a breakaway and UNB going a man down. Lakehead peppered the UNB goal but Bourcier stayed firm. The 15th OT saw neither team with a dangerous chance. UNB outshot Lakehead 20-14 in the sudden death overtime periods.

At this point; it was decided to go to a shootout to declare a winner. Lakehead's Joel Scherban was first and missed high. Colin Sinclair was up for UNB and fired high off Whitley's shoulder and off the crossbar. Sinclair thought it was in and argued strenuously and was ejected. Lakehead's Jeff Richards was next up and beat Bourcier low between the pads. Whitley then stopped UNB's Ryan Mockler with a glove save. Lakehead's Chris Shaffer then missed high right. UNB's Rob Hennigar was up and stopped by a Whitley kick save. Lakehead's Murray Magill was then stopped by Boucier. UNB's Ryan Johnston tied it with a high shot. Lakehead's Peter Cava was blocked by Bourcier. UNB's Nathan O'Nabigon was stopped and it was one apiece after five shooters. Lakehead's Erik Lodge then missed with a deke. UNB's Mahon was up next and seemed to mock Lodge's effort before his shot. Then the UNB Captain was stopped by Whitley to the delight of the crowd who had developed a dislike for Mahon. Sean Stefanski then seemed to score but it was disallowed. UNB's Kyle Werner then completely missed the net. Lakehead's Jason Lange was then block nicely by Boucier. Dustin Friesen then hit the post. Lakehead's Tobias Whelan was then stopped by Bourcier. UNB's Jesse Ferguson was then stopped by Whitley. Bourcier then stopped Lakehead's Brad Priestlay. Whitley then stopped UNB's Stacey Smallman. Lakehead's Jouni Kuokkanen then put a great deke on Bourcier to give Lakehead the lead. UNB's Stonier was up to tie the game but Whitley stopped him with a pad save to get the win.

The Molson Three Stars, as chosen by Leith Dunick of Thunder Bay's Source, were:
1) Lakehead: Jounni Kuokkanen
2) Lakehead: Peter Cava
