Ravens earn 72-46 victory over RMC

OTTAWA - The Carleton University Ravens Women's Basketball team defeated the Royal Military College Paladins, 72-46, on Senior Night at the Ravens' Nest to improve their 2008-2009 OUA regular season record to 14-8, the best regular season finish in the program's history.

Tonight's victory lines up an OUA East quarterfinal playoff game at home on Wednesday, February 18th, 2009, versus the Queen's University Gaels at the Ravens' Nest. Last year the Ravens faced the Gaels in an OUA East quarterfinal matchup. Carleton was victorious in the game winning their first ever playoff game as a program, 67-58, over the Gaels in Kingston.

The first quarter opened with the visiting Paladins taking an early 8-3 lead after the visiting RMC Paladins took an early 8-3 lead before the Ravens would score five unanswered points to tie the game at 8-8 halfway through the opening quarter. Carleton capitalized on two turnovers late in the quarter to build momentum as Tanya Perry of Barrie, Ontario closed out the quarter with a three-point shot and a 19-14 Raven lead. Carleton outscored RMC 15-9 in the second quarter to take a 34-23 halftime lead. Perry added 3 points to increase her tally to 6 points, the highest of the Ravens through the first half.

Prior to resuming play in the third quarter a special presentation by Head Coach Taffe Charles took place for the three graduating athletes of the team. Fourth-year guard Tanya Perry, fourth-year forward Ines Jelic of London, Ontario and fourth-year guard Julie Hoo of Huntsville, Ontario were honored for their outstanding achievements as student-athletes.

The Ravens improved their shooting in the third quarter and continued to dictate play against the Paladins. Kelly Killoran of Sarnia, Ontario sunk a three-point shot for a 14-point advantage with five minutes remaining in the quarter, a lead the Ravens would maintain through to the final quarter of play. Carleton had a commanding fourth-quarter performance, outscoring the visitors 21-9 to secure a 72-46 victory.

Leading the scoring for Carleton was Tanya Perry who scored a game-high 16 points and recorded 8 rebounds. Ashleigh Cleary of Kemptville, Ontario tallied 15 points and 7 rebounds and teammate Courtney Smith of Ottawa, Ontario rounded out the Ravens scoring with 11 points and 1 rebound.

RMC was led by Kim Egert of Westport, Ontario scored 12 points and 3 rebounds, Abby Edmison of Carleton Place, Ontario added 9 points and 5 rebounds, while teammate Sharlene Harding of Brampton, Ontario contributed with 8 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.

Ravens: 19-15-17-21=72
RMC: 14-9-14-9=46

Leading Scorers:
Ravens: Perry: 16 points
RMC: Egert: 12 points

Team Rebounds:
Ravens: 9 + 30 = 39
RMC: 7 + 30 = 37
